IL HOON ROH is a forerunner of a new generation of designers. Having received his architecture degree in London, he integrates the fundamentals of the Arts & Crafts movement into his work. Largely self-developed, he brings together his vast knowledge of architecture and design, both organic and architectural. He takes this knowledge and goes further by using the most innovative materials with precise and scientific methodology, exploring their technical and aesthetic limits. His imagination, constantly in search of pure and aerial forms, leans on the natural laws of physics, energy and gravity to create harmonious forms with remarkable accuracy.
The explosiveness of his approach essentially consists of composing or decomposing the material, using innovative and imaginative techniques together with the most advanced technology and materials, which are sometimes custom-made for his projects. The final outcome is high-end craftsmanship, intertwining artisanal traditions with industrial products at the highest level.
Born in South Korea, in 1978, IL HOON ROH settled in London in 1991. There he studied architecture, receiving a diploma from the Architectural Association School of Architecture and a Masters in Design Products from the Royal College of Art. He then joined Foster and Partners as an architect and later became a part of the Royal Institute of British Architects. In 2010, he decided to express his artistic desires by creating functional sculptures and established his own studio in London in order to further develop his research. Then, in 2013, he moved his studio to the heart of Seoul, within an industrial zone, where a plethora of workshops are at his disposition.
Eddie Can, Chiu-Fai holds a Bachelor degree in architecture (distinction) from the University of Kansas and a Master degree in design and computation (Thesis Prize) from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Since graduation, He worked in several offices in New York City, Paris, and Milan, before joining Zaha Hadid Architects in 1998.
At present, he is an associate/project director in Zaha M. Hadid, Architects. He is responsible for project design and development, construction management, digital fabrication and new technologies integration. His experience includes the running of projects such as the art installations in Miami Art-Basel, Venice Biennale, and Cologne Furniture Fair, Louis Vuitton Flagship store (Macau, China), Dongdaemun Design Plaza (Seoul, Korea), Changsha Meixihu International Culture and Art Center (Hunan, China) and working on a number of winning competitions such as Wolfsburg Science Center (Germany) and Bergsiel Ski-Jump (Austria).
Luca Frattari is a Ph.D. graduated at the School of Architecture and Design “Eduardo Vittoria”, University of Camerino, Ascoli Piceno, Italy. He received his Ph.D. in Architecture and Industrial Design from the School of Advanced Studies (SAS) at the University of Camerino, Italy.
His Ph.D. on the application of Topology Optimization in Architecture and Industrial Design involves several disciplines such as: structural form-finding, free form structures, conceptual design, structural analysis, 3D modeling, visualization, rapid prototyping and interactive graphic user interface.
His works have been oriented to discover the potential in the integration and application of new technologies in Architecture and Industrial Design to define an innovative methodology for the conceptual design.
His research has been published and presented in several international conferences, including the World Congress on Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization.
Miso Kim is an industrial designer at Altair Thinklabs, a global creative company that helps businesses succeed through human-centered design. She grew up in Seoul, South Korea and studied industrial design at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Her multicultural experiences allow her to understand problems in different ways and bring unique solutions to the table. Miso has worked on diverse projects including the stage design of the 2016 IDSA International Conference, and kitchen electronics for Panasonic.
Do Young Kim is an artist who creates beautiful, elaborate sculptures with paper. He is a pioneer in the field of paper-folding sculpture, which is fundamentally different from origami, an art form of folding a single piece of paper, or paper craft, which creates three-dimensional objects with paper by employing various techniques, such as cutting and gluing.
Kim places the highest value on aesthetic integrity of the work itself along with structural stability. He tries to achieve sturdiness by folding even the smallest part of a paper in order to overcome the limits of the material characteristic to paper so that his paper sculptures remain undamaged even when dropped and maintain their original shape when stored for extended lengths of time. This is the reason his paper robots are significantly more durable than plastic models or paper craft works. His creations do not employ the use of scissors or knives but only folding by hand. Sculpture is no longer limited to metal or wood, as Kim evidently shows by expanding the scope of sculpture to the field of paper.
